Angelica
Angelica is a genus of Apiaceae, some members of which are grown as a flavoring agent and for their medicinal properties. The most notable of these is Angelica archangelica which is commonly known just as Angelica. Sea watch, Angelica lucida, has been eaten as a sort of "wild celery".
Angelica archangelica grows wild in Finland, Sweden and Norway, mostly in the northern parts of the countries. In Finnish it is called väinönputki, in Sami faddnu or fadno, in English garden angelica, in German arznei-engelwurz, in Swedish kvanne and in Norwegian it has the name kvann.
Usage/History. Used for medical, spicy and utilities, especielly in Samic culture. A fluite instrument with a clarinette-like sound can be maded due to its hollow stem, probably a toy for childrens. Linné reported Samic peoples used it in reindeer milk. Other usages include spicies in liqueurs or aquavits, e.g. Chartreuse, Benedictine, etc.
Etyomolgy. Archangelica comes from the greek word "arkhangelos" (=arch-angle), due to the myth that it was the angel Gabriel who told of its use as medicine.
