Antirrhinum
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Scrophulariales
Family:Scrophulariaceae
Genus: Antirrhinum
Species
Anitrrhinum majus
Antirrhinum is a genus of plants in the family Scrophulariaceae, more commonly known as snapdragons, from the fancied resemblance of the flowers to the face of a dragon. According to ITIS, the only species currently recognised in this genus is the garden snapdragon, Anitrrhinum majus. Cultivated varieties of this species have showy white, crimson, or yellow bilabiate flowers.
While Antirrhinum majus is the plant that is meant if the word "snapdragon" is used on its own, many other species in the family Scrophulariaceae have common names that include the word "snapdragon", particularly the members of genus Sairocarpus, Neogaerrhinum, Howelliella, Misopates and Maurendella, which have respectively 12, 2, 1, 1 and 1 species, all of which are named as kinds of snapdragon. Most of these were formerly classified in genus Antirrhinum, as were some plants now placed in other genera that are not called snapdragons.
