Avalon (ZIP code 90704) is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,127. Avalon is located on Santa Catalina Island.
Geography
Avalon is located at 33°20'27" North, 118°19'40" West (33.340941, -118.327821)1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.48% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 3,127 people, 1,158 households, and 719 families residing in the city. The population density is 429.7/km² (1,112.4/mi²). There are 1,839 housing units at an average density of 252.7/km² (654.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.63% White, 0.74% African American, 1.02% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 20.37% from other races, and 5.40% from two or more races. 45.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,158 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 31.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.38.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $39,327, and the median income for a family is $46,406. Males have a median income of $30,789 versus $24,643 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,032. 10.4% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.5% are under the age of 18 and 4.6% are 65 or older.
