• founding guitarist Hillel Slovak (d. June 1988 from a heroin overdose), replaced by:
• guitarist Jack Sherman, played on the first album when Hillel was bound to a different record company
• guitarist Duane 'Blackbird' McKnight. He didn't work out so they turned to an 18 year old fan whose guitar playing impressed them:
• current guitarist John Frusciante, who has released several solo albums, temporarily left the band during the Japanese leg of the tour in support of 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik and was replaced by:
• guitarist Arik Marshall, followed by;
• guitarist Jess Tobias, followed by;
• guitarist Dave Navarro, formerly of Jane's Addiction;
• founding drummer Jack Irons; who went on to play with Pearl Jam
• drummer Cliff Martinez, played on the first album when Jack Irons was bound to a different record company
• Drummer D.H. Peligro formerly of Dead Kennedys;
• Current drummer Chad Smith.
